Massacre in a Kenya Church

advertisement

NAIROBI, Kenya - A mob torched a church where hundreds had sought refuge Tuesday, and witnesses said dozens of people — including children — were burned alive or hacked to death with machetes in ethnic violence that followed Kenya's disputed election.

The killing of up to 50 ethnic Kikuyus in the Rift Valley city of Eldoret brought the death toll from four days of rioting to more than 275, raising fears of further unrest in what has been one of Africa's most stable democracies.

The latest violence recalled scenes from the genocide in Rwanda in 1994, when more than a half-million people were killed. The question facing Kenya is whether the politicians will lose control of the mobs, triggering a civil war.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

Please keep Kenya in your thoughts and prayers. This is an extremely volatile situation in a nation that has been a relatively calm oasis in Eastern Africa, though al Qaeda has sought to exploit troubles there in recent years. The current president is corrupt and likely stole the election, but the violence spiraling out of control there now is not good for anyone.

I'm concerned with the lack of communication between the various communities. I've been listening to live interviews on BBC World Service direct from various hot spots in Kenya. Plus, the Al-Jazeera English channel providing in-depth roving reports through the larger six suburban slum areas, along with outlining towns. In one interview, a priest was unable to even join a conversation about racial or tribal issues with his intense anger/fear screaming "WE HAVE NO PROBLEMS". It could be al Qaeda or anyone imaginable to easily ignite such raw feelings of distrust.

I honestly have not invested enough time to fully scope out the full historical issues underlying the delicate tribal structures of this great country, or African Economic Tiger. We (The West) may yet again miss the mark on the root causes of this horrible period of instability.

My heart goes out to all of these family members, especially the children that survived this horrible massacre... They are the ones that have to live with the heartache of losing their loved ones... Our missionaries from Seaside Assembly of God; the Carrillo family are over there and are working so hard to help build up this impoverished area and in an instant it is being burnt down. I am pleading with the people who are responsible for this violence... What do you want your family legacy to be; that as murderers who fought for their "cause" or peace keepers that can help change their world one child at a time? The people who are behind these people are cowards as they send you all to do their "dirty work", you are killing your own people... please take in to consideration these children, who's lives have already been damaged by no fault of their own... why would you want to keep hurting them, please remember the children... they may not even have a mother or father, they need hope not violence... I pray for each and everyone of you to turn your lives and hearts towards God as he loves even the damnest of the damn... God Bless you all...

Words of hope.

Rom 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.

Mat 5:44 But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you,
