Top 7 Myths, Lies and Untruths About Sarah Palin

advertisement

Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin has been subjected to an intense amount of media and public scrutiny since she was named as John McCain's vice presidential pick one week ago. Many of the attacks have come in the form of unconfirmed reports on the Internet. Among them ...

What's this?
Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

The radical far Left has engaged in a hateful and hysterical smear campaign during the past week that is exceptionally shocking ... and, given some of the hate the far Left has engaged in over the years, that is saying something.

But, we are dealing with the mindset of people who would smear a 5-month-old Down Syndrome baby, or a pregnant teenager, in order to somehow destroy a political opponent.

Thank you Tom great find it is sad to see where this has all went the past week. Hell I just want to see a fair election where the best candidate wins. Too bad some use this as an opportunity to let their inner ugliness come out.

BTW That see was a farce and all the deleting of comments made me physically ill.

Rob, I was there in "that" seed also, and was shocked at the egregious abuse of power by the moderator. I was glad to see that the Newsvine community did the right thing. It was a slanderous article and the mod's behavior compounded the problem.

The extreme hatred and irrationality exhibited here on the Vine in recent days has trumped anything I've seen here before in 15 months. It's sad and troubling.

Here's a very typical example of an irresponsible smear currently generating a lot of controversy here on the Vine:

Todd Palin's Business Partner Blah Blah Blah Affair Blah Blah Smear Slander Blah

I was going to link another extreme and hateful seed from the same seeder, but it was deleted by the Newsvine community, thank goodness. However, the seeder managed to say this harsh comment before getting deleted: "She [Palin] is a cancer."

If this is where commentary and seeding is heading on the Vine, it's going to be a long and rough 2 months here.

The front page of Newsvine for the past week has been a veritable temple of hate against Sarah Palin and her family. Seldom have so many lies been told by so many in such a short amount of time.

The sick and unproven allegation that she had an affair is just one more foul, unsubstantiated smear thrown against her.

And then, there are the true - but irrelevant - issues being used against her: the firing of her moronic and creepy ex-brother-in-law and her husband's arrest more than 20 years ago for DUI (which is around the same time Obama was admittedly using drugs ... so what).

I don't support Sarah Palin, but I don't hate her either. But it's laughable when McCain touts her to America as the person who will 'shake up' Washington.

Give me a break. The VP doesn't make policy, has reletively little power, and everyone in Washington would stonewall her anyway. She's a newbie and an admitted whistle-blower.

Palin was chosen simply to attract the ultra-right wing of the Republican party to the ticket. In that, McCain succeeded. In reality, the undecided women voters, and female Clinton supporters are going over to Obama. Like they're going to support a woman who thinks we should be living in 1952 again...

RB, I don't think you've contributed to the tsunami of hate. I think you disagree with Palin, and you're not voting for her ... and there's nothing wrong with that. There are other Viners, however, who are seeding and writing outrageous and hateful lies that are totally unsubstantiated and untenable. This really damages the credibility of this site and erodes the community - it is contributing to a dramatically ratcheted up sense of hostility on the site.

Excellent point. I appreciate the conservative sites out there, but as you say, so much of it is preaching to the choir. I like to be here and mix it up with the Left, learn what their thought-processes are (or are not), and even have the chance to dialogue with Moderates and Undecided voters, or those I would call "liberals of good will."

And, even though this site is dominated by the Left, I think the site seriously needs more and active Conservative participation to prevent it from becoming just another DailyKos.

I can't imagine that Calvin or anyone on the Newsvine staff would want that to happen. One of the strengths of the site is the spark of give and take and the freedom to speak out. If Conservatives are hounded off the site, then Newsvine loses some of the essence that makes it special.

The Newsvine staff has given me free reign to say and seed whatever I wanted. Over at DailyKos, however, Markos rules with an iron fist and you disagree with the party line there at your own peril. I think that's why DailyKos just keeps getting more and more unhinged...it's an echo chamber for moon bats.

A friend of mine worked with the Clinton campaign on the national level. Several staffers are very upset because they were not being allowed to participate with the Obama campaign until Gov. Palin entered the picture. She has not said that she and her fellow workers will be supporting Senator McCain, but she said the "bad blood" left over from the primaries is still alive and may keep a lot of Senator Clinton's supporters at home.

I am an Obama supporter, and my frustration about Palin is how they dropped her in out of the sky with two months to go in the campaign, and now they aren't going to give the media access to her. The lame excuse that "she'll talk to the American People" is a crock, because the people watching her speeches can't ask questions.

It's not even her policies or her past actions that are the problem, its that she's running as someone who is not consistent with those policies and past actions.

Specifically:

Calling herself a reformer when she was part of the Don Young/Ted Stevens cabal up there, at least until those guys got in trouble.

Saying that she's anti-lobbyist, when she hired a Washington Lobbyist to get money for Wasilla, and came away with $27 Million. How she left that town in debt is beyond me.

Trying to take credit for killing the bridge project, when the record is clear that she was for it in 2006 when she was running for Governor. I heard a sound bite in her own voice advocating the project. Then there was a huge backlash against it, and it got killed, but she kept the money anyway so the American People still paid over $200 Million for nothing.

One thing that was on the Fox list that I think is relevant is her "abstinence-only" stance on sex-ed. For her to say that she's not against sex education and then say that abstinence-only is all they'll teach is a joke. Everyone knows that A-O education doesn't work. That is what makes her daughter's situation a relevant issue, not that the daughter should be maligned in any way (and I haven't heard her attacked specifically, just her mother). If the Palin household, with their devout faith and significant resources, can't keep their daughter from getting pregnant before she's 18, then what chance does everyone else have? Give those kids some knowledge, and then some condoms!

You're welcome to call this sexist, but teenage girls need their parents around. Mr. Palin apparently travels for long stretches because of the nature of his work, and with Mrs. Palin in what I would imagine is a pretty intense job I wonder how much "face time" Bristol got with her mom.

Again, I'm not judging that, until the McCain Campaign is shoving her down my throat as America's Number One Mom. They're the ones who are putting this stuff in play by the way they are framing her.

The troopergate thing is a problem. She abused her power, plain and simple, and it's not the only example of that part of her management style.

I'm not interested in attacking her as a person, but I do want answers to these contradictions between what she says on the stump and what actually happened. Oh, and please ask her to stop lying about Obama in speeches, especially if she's not going to face questions from the media about her charges.

While I agree that the media has been overwhelmingly biased against Palin, and overwhelmingly favorable towards Senator Obama, I actually wish it was all less about dirt and more about issues.

I want to like Obama - in fact, in some ways, I do. But, his policies, worldview, record, and plans simply dictate that I cannot vote for him. I even wrote an article some months ago for Newsvine called "Smearing Obama: Stop It!" I want to be fair; and that is one reason I am so appalled and sickened by the way the Left has viciously smeared Palin and her family.

Seriously, how low can a person be that they need to smear an infant with Down Syndrome or an unwed pregnant teen?

If there are legitimate issues where Obama has transgressed (Ayers, Wright, Rezko, Live Birth Abortion, inexperience, record), then I believe he should be criticized, and the mainstream media has done a poor job "vetting" him. But, I don't want to see him simply demonized, and I definitely think that his children (who are absolutely adorable, by the way) or his wife (to the degree that she is not part of the active campaign) should be attacked.

bg, don't you know, Barry is "THE ONE". He has done no wrong ever in his life. I'm from the Chicago area, my Dad worked in City Hall. Illinois politics are machine driven with Chicago being the "driver"....it's like the mafia in many ways. Obama has paid his "dues", or he wouldn't have gotten this far, believe me. I'm an Independent, with conservative leanings BECAUSE I've seen Chicago's political cesspool.

SG, I read the article about Palin and the bridge, but I also read some of the comments. Seemed to me that even some Dems respect her. Thanks for the article. BTW, what is your site? I'd like to read more about Palin....

Check out spaceguy's Newsvine profile page for many excellent articles about Sarah Palin. And, I think your comments about Chicago politics are right on. My grandmother grew up in Chicago during the 1920s and there's a lot about the underbelly of Chicago that hasn't changed a lot since then. The Ayers issue should still be explored. And, Rev. Wright is about to emerge again onto the national scene with his upcoming book. The Obama campaign is not happy about that, and I don't blame them for being upset. The timing, from Senator Obama's point of view, stinks.

loosecannon....just about every comic in Hollywood has taken a stab at Bristol. especially, hateful was Joan Rivers and Kathy Griffith/Griffin(whatever), the red-head with the filthy mouth. Maybe you need to get on Ms Huffy's blog or dailykos. She's been blasted up one side and down the other, and, now, the boyfriend is getting muddied. The Dems haven't got a civilized bone in their bodies. And they are really looking low down and classless.

Kathy Griffin is pure hatred. She's as funny as a splinter under a fingernail and about as lovely. If she and Joan Rivers (the Johnny Carson backstabber whose heart is more plastic than her face) hate Palin, that's all the more reason to appreciate Palin.

Good news, for a change.

My desire to look at the front page of Newsvine has turned to dread in the last couple weeks.

Is it crazy that I feel under attack?

Is the photo on Fox the one that has been floating around? I gotta say, I kinda like it . . . looks like a camping, swimming, hunting trip picture. Too bad it's faked.

I also have to echo pen above: This has exposed the extreme lack of class on the Left!

Juno, I believe that Palin has become the new lightning rod ... all of the Bush hatred from the Left has now been channelled towards her. And, it seems that they are attempting to pour onto her in eight days the same amount of venom they poured on Bush in eight years.

Yes, they are. It looks like a feeding frenzy out there! The 'rush' is on and they are invigorated.

Well, be of good courage, because just as some of the shrieking banshees on the far Left are invigorated, even more Conservatives are finally excited about this election. My wife and college-age daughter are so encouraged about Palin and they have already formed a group with several of their friends in a grassroots support effort. They've never really been politically active before.

A surprising number of college-age women are really interested about Palin's views and candidacy, and they find her quite appealing.

If word-of-mouth means a thing, we're doing our part. I know of a few people who've moved over to McCain/Palin. Due in part to the engagement of my family members who usually leave the political stuff to me.

There are other's who were voting for McCain, but not promoting him, who are now that Palin has joined the team.

We've got a race on our hands now.

I truly think Palin is appealing because she is closer to the model of modern woman than the 'feminists' believe.

Something else that I've realized since the Palin phenomena began: There are a lot of people out there that have a strange view of historical women. And especially 'conservative' women.

I was watching a Palin bio yesterday. She was describing the short time from delivery of her children till she returned to work at one point. It brought to my mind the nomadic tribal women who'd squat, birth, then resume the trail with a newborn slung to their chest. . . .

Yes! I was thinking the same thing. That is tough as nails.

Yes sir, tough as nails!

You honor me!

I think her strength will resinate with many women, and many men will see in her the strength they see in the women they love and respect.

Very true, Juno. Palin represents a large segment of American women whose voices have been censored or stifled by so much of the news media, by popular entertainment, and by academic elitism. There is one "accepted" model of feminism or womanhood that has been promoted and it has disenfranchised millions of women who don't follow that model. Sarah Palin is their voice.

I have high hopes for Palin.

I'm honestly disappointed by much of what is being said. I wasn't for Hillary, but I sure didn't take part in the same stuff that I'm seeing done to Palin. Goodness, Lisaed and I had a wonderful conversation about Hill's speech at the DNC, with praise and kudos . . .

Another article that illustrates the now obvious divide between women, is Ms. Drew's.

Thanks for that link ... I went and commented at #2.14.

So many women for whom I have deep and abiding respect would loathe the sneering and elitist Leftcore feminist ideology - which patronizes and disenfranchises millions of women who cherish traditional values - that is advocated in that article.

My favorite news that just came out about Palin...

From Zogby:

The McCain/Palin ticket wins 49.7% support, compared to 45.9% backing for the Obama/Biden ticket, this latest online survey shows

Not bad, already a 4% lead even under some of the worst attacks ever mounted against a woman candidate.

TJ, I truly believe these sleazy attacks from the far Left are going to backfire against the Obama/Biden ticket. Obama ought to issue another "cease and desist" to his supporters.
